Information : The Ministry of Minority Affairs has introduced a scheme of Merit Cum Means Based Scholarship for students belonging to the minority communities for technical and professional courses at under-graduate and post-graduate levels. This is a centrally sponsored scheme, fully funded by the Central Government. The objective of the Scheme is to provide financial assistance to the poor and meritorious students belonging to minority communities to enable them to pursue professional and technical courses. The scholarship scheme has been implemented by the Government of Tamil Nadu through Directorate of Minorities Welfare,

Chennai in coordination with Tamil Nadu Minorities Economic Development Corporation. The Tamil Nadu has been forefront in implementing various welfare programs to Minorities.

Also Ministry of Minority Affairs, Govt.of India provides post-matric scholarship scheme for meritorious students from minority communities. The objective of the scheme is to award scholarships to meritorious students belonging to economically weaker sections of minority community so as to provide them better opportunities for higher education, increase their rate of attainment in higher education and enhance their employability. Information : The objective of the Government is to take up measures for the all – round development of BCs/MBCs/DNCs. The Tamil Nadu has been forefront in implementing various welfare programs to Minorities. Also the Government offers free education schemes for under graduation based on the student‟s socio- economic status. There are incentives for rural MBC/DNC girl students.

Scholarship application forms are centrally printed and supplied to the Educational Institutions by the District Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare Officers in the districts. The eligible BC/MBC/DNC students can therefore easily obtain the Scholarship forms free of cost and resubmit the filled in application forms directly to the Heads of Educational Institutions. However specimen copy of the Scholarship application forms is also made available the above mentioned website, which can be down-loaded by the general public/students, in case of any difficulty in securing the printed scholarship applications from the Educational Institutions. Students are generally advised to apply for scholarships in the printed scholarship forms.

Thanthai Periyar Memorial Award

Two Boys and Two Girls in each district, who secured Highest marks in X Std. among the BC/MBC/DNC students and studying Diploma Courses in Polytechnics are awarded Rs.3000/- per year for three years. There is no income ceiling fixed and no application is necessary. Prizes will be awarded by the DBCWOs on receipt of merit list from Directorate of Government Examinations and disbursed through the Heads of Educational Institutions.

Perarignar Anna Memorial Award

2 Boys and 2 Girls in each district from BC/MBC/DNC students who secured Highest marks in +2 Exams in each District and pursuing Professional Courses Viz. Medical, Engineering,

Veterinary, Law, Agriculture, etc., in the Institutions situated in Tamil Nadu are awarded Rs.3000/- per year for four years or till the normal Course completion. No income ceiling is fixed and no application is necessary. The prizes will be awarded by DBCOs on receipt of merit list from Directorate of Government Examination and disbursed through the Heads of Educational Institutions.

For the BC / MBC /DNC students staying in hostels attached to educational institutions & private approved hostels, in addition to the regular Postmatric / Free Education amounts, the boarding & lodging charges are also sanctioned and disbursed along with the scholarship amount. The students staying in Hostels attached to the Institutions are eligible for sanction of boarding & lodging charges at the a specified rates. The Government is running 973 BC, MBC & DNC Hostel throughout the State. Students are eligible to avail this facility based on their socio economic status. Besides the above free Government hostels, the Government have also recognised privately managed subsidised hostels for enabling the poor BC/MBC/DNC students to secure accommodation and food for continuing their studies.

Information : The scholarship may be tenable for a period of two years to enable the rank holders of each university at undergraduate level to pursue their Master‟s Degree. While in General Courses the First and Second Rank holders admitted in any Postgraduate Programme would be awarded the scholarship, in Honours Courses the scholarship would be awarded only to the First Rank holders. These awardees will have to submit the proofs of their merit position at undergraduate level as well of their admission in postgraduate programmes. The scholarship would, however, be subjected to securing a minimum of sixty per cent marks at undergraduate level.The scheme is applicable to such students who have taken admission in regular, full-time Master‟s Degree course in any recognized university or a Post-Graduate college. Information : The Union Government of India has taken various steps to uplift the status of women by implementing various schemes including free education for girls. In order to achieve and promote girls education, UGC has introduced a Post Graduate Indira Gandhi Scholarship for single girl child with an aim to compensate direct costs of girl education to all levels specially for such girls who happen to be the only girl child in their families. The girl students who are admitted to various non-professional PG courses in Universities / Colleges and happen to be the only girl child in the family. Any single girl child of her parents only. In a family if one son and one daughter is available then girl child will not be considered for scholarship under the scheme. The scheme is applicable to such a single girl child who has taken admission in regular, full-time Masters Degree course in any recognized university or a post graduate college. Information : The "Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana" (KVPY) is a program started in 1999 by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India to encourage students of Basic Sciences, Engineering and Medicine to take up research careers in these areas. The aim of the program is to identify and encourage talented students with aptitude for research. The KVPY is funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. The program is administered by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc, Bangalore). The selection of students from those studying in +1, +2, any U.G. Program in Science / Medicine and also Engineering students having aptitude for scientific research, are carried out by IISc (Bangalore), IIT-Bombay (Mumbai), and ICMR (New Delhi), respectively, in association with two Zonal Centers one at Kolkata (Indian Institute of Science Education & Research, Kolkata) and another at Mumbai (HBCSE, TIFR). There are special groups or committees set up at IISc, which screen the applications, conduct interviews at various centers, make the final selection. Generous scholarship and contingency grant are provided (up to the pre-Ph.D. level) to the selected students. In addition, summer programs for the KVPY Fellows are organized in prestigious research and educational institutions in the country.

Stream SB: Students enrolled in 1st year B. Sc./B.S./Int. M.Sc. during the academic year 2011–2012 and have secured a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST) marks in aggregate in SCIENCE subjects in the XII Standard Board Examination.

SP (Basic Sciences)

Students enrolled in XI/XII standard, I/II year (B.Sc../B.S./Int. M.Sc.) in Basic Sciences and I/II year B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch. during the academic year 2011–2012 and have secured a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST) marks in aggregate in the X & XII Standard Board Examinations. Additionally students enrolled in the II year B.Sc./B.S./Int. M.Sc/B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch. program must have secured a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST) marks in the I year examination.
